Pets Are a Favorite at the Cape May - Lewes Ferry
Our pet-friendly policy allows animals to travel either in your vehicle or with you on our open decks. We ask that you follow a few basic guidelines to ensure a pleasant experience for all passengers, both two-legged and four-legged. Responsible pet travel helps keep the Ferry clean, enjoyable, and welcoming for everyone on board.
If you’re traveling as a foot passenger, you can still bring your pet! Pets are welcome in all outdoor areas of the terminal grounds and exterior vessel decks. Please note that pets are not permitted inside interior cabins, food service areas, or indoor lounges due to health and safety regulations. We recommend bringing water, waste bags, and any comfort items your pet may need during the 85-minute trip.
During warmer months, remember that surfaces—especially the vehicle deck—can get hot enough to harm your pet’s paws. When in doubt, test the surface with your own hand or foot before allowing your pet to walk on it. Our crew is always happy to assist and offer guidance to help make your journey as smooth as possible.
Service Animals on the Ferry
The Cape May–Lewes Ferry fully complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and welcomes service animals trained to assist passengers with disabilities. Service animals are permitted in all areas of our vessels and terminals where passengers are allowed to go. No additional documentation or fees are required.
If you’re traveling with a service animal, please ensure your companion is properly harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the animal’s work or your disability prevents their use. Our crew members are trained to recognize and accommodate ADA guidelines. They will gladly assist with boarding or any special needs you may have. Can I keep my pet in my vehicle during the trip?
Yes. Many travelers choose to leave their pets safely in their vehicles during the crossing. The car deck remains well-ventilated, but please consider your pet’s comfort and temperature.
During warm weather, we strongly recommend cracking your windows slightly and avoiding travel during the hottest parts of the day. Passengers are not permitted to remain in their vehicles while the vessel is underway.
Can I walk my pet on the deck?
Absolutely! Pets are welcome on all exterior passenger decks. These areas provide plenty of space for fresh air, exercise, and great photo opportunities.
Please keep your pet leashed, under control, and off seats or tables.
Remember to clean up after your pet using waste bags, which we encourage you to bring with you.
Can my pet go inside indoor lounges or food areas?
No. To comply with FDA regulations and health codes, pets (except service animals) are not allowed in indoor passenger lounges, food preparation areas, or snack bars.
In bad weather and the winter, pets are allowed in the seating areas of the salon but not in the food service areas.
Feel free to enjoy the outdoor decks or shaded spots with your pet instead.
Are pets allowed if I’m traveling as a walk-on passenger?
Yes! Walk-on passengers are welcome to bring pets aboard as long as they remain on a leash or in a secure carrier.
Please plan to board and disembark via the same passenger gangway as other foot travelers and maintain control of your pet at all times.
Can I bring a small pet in a carrier or stroller?
Yes, small pets are welcome in carriers or pet strollers. Carriers must be secure, well-ventilated, and small enough for you to handle comfortably. You may set the carrier at your feet while seated outdoors.
What if my pet becomes anxious or disruptive?
If your pet becomes restless or noisy, we may ask you to move to another outdoor area for everyone’s comfort.
Familiar toys, treats, or blankets can help calm nervous animals during travel.

Do I need to show vaccination records or paperwork?
No documentation is required for pets on the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. However, we recommend that your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly if you plan to visit dog parks or beaches after disembarking.
